About Aït Ben Haddou
Aït Ben Haddou is the most photographed ksar in Morocco — a fortified red-mud village that climbs a hillside above the Asif Ounila riverbed. Settled in the 11th century on the salt and gold caravan route between Marrakech and Timbuktu, the village houses (mostly empty today) layer up the slope to a "agadir" granary at the top. UNESCO since 1987. The village is 30 km west of Ouarzazate and the standard lunch stop on every 3-day Marrakech-to-Sahara tour.
Things to do in Aït Ben Haddou
- Stay in a guesthouse on the "new village" side and walk into the ksar at sunrise — golden, empty, magical.
- Climb to the top granary for 360° desert and palm-grove views.
- Cross the (often dry) Asif Ounila riverbed — sometimes sandbag stepping-stones, sometimes a donkey carries you for MAD 10.
- Tour the Atlas and CLA film studios in Ouarzazate, then return for sunset on the ksar — the standard half-day combo.
- Photograph the ksar from the "Game of Thrones viewpoint" on the new-village side at golden hour.
- Buy a small ksar-themed painting from one of the in-village artists — pigments are real saffron, indigo, henna.
Local tips for Aït Ben Haddou
- Stay the night — almost every group tour stops at lunch only. Sunrise and sunset are the magic moments and you’ll have the ksar to yourself.
- Donations to families still living inside the ksar (about 8) are appreciated; small purchases support them.
- There is no entrance fee for the ksar itself, only for the kasbah houses you choose to enter (MAD 10–20 each).
- The climb to the top granary takes 20–30 min — bring water and grippy shoes.
- Heat in July-August is brutal (40 °C+). Visit October-April for comfortable conditions.
