Highlights

About Chefchaouen

Founded in 1471 as a refuge for Andalusian Muslims and Jews fleeing the Reconquista, Chefchaouen sits at 600 m elevation in the Rif. The famous blue wash was likely introduced in the 1930s by Jewish residents — locals re-paint twice a year so the colour stays vivid. The town is compact, walkable, and cooler in summer than the rest of Morocco. Combine 1 night in the medina with a half-day hike to the Spanish Mosque viewpoint or a full-day excursion to Akchour waterfalls and "God’s Bridge".

Things to do in Chefchaouen

  1. Start at Plaza Uta el-Hammam for breakfast — the 15th-century kasbah faces it across the square.
  2. Photo-walk the blue alleys at sunrise (8–9 am) before the day-trip crowds arrive from Tangier.
  3. Hike 30 minutes to the Spanish Mosque viewpoint for golden-hour panorama over the medina.
  4. Day-trip to Akchour: 1h drive, then 2–4h round-trip hike to the cascades and God’s Bridge.
  5. Try local Rif specialties — bissara soup for breakfast, goat cheese, and kefta tagine.
  6. Shop for woolen blankets and natural-dye wovens — Chefchaouen is one of Morocco’s best for textiles.
  7. Walk the ramparts at dusk above the Ras El-Maa spring — locals come here to do their laundry.

Local tips for Chefchaouen

  • Stay overnight — most tourists arrive 11am and leave 5pm. The town transforms at dusk.
  • Wear flat, grippy shoes — alleys are steep and slippery when freshly washed.
  • Cash is king — many medina shops don’t take cards. ATM at Bab el-Ain works.
  • Be respectful of residents’ doorways when taking photos — knock before stepping into a "blue staircase" shot.
  • Local kif (cannabis) is widely grown in the Rif but illegal — politely decline offers from "guides".

Chefchaouen — frequently asked questions

How do I get to Chefchaouen?

There is no airport in Chefchaouen. Most travelers arrive by private car or bus from Fes (4h), Tangier (2.5h), or Casablanca (5.5h).

Is one day enough in Chefchaouen?

One day lets you see the highlights, but staying overnight is much better — the town is magical after the day-trip crowds leave.

Is Chefchaouen actually blue?

Yes — almost every wall and stairway in the old medina is painted in shades of blue, and locals re-paint twice a year.

Is Chefchaouen safe for solo female travelers?

Yes, very. Chefchaouen is one of the friendliest and safest towns in Morocco. Dress modestly out of respect for the conservative Rif region.
