About Atlas Mountains — Imlil

At 1,740 m and 1h45 from Marrakech, Imlil is the gateway to the High Atlas and Mt Toubkal (4,167 m, the highest peak in North Africa). The valley is lined with walnut and apple orchards, terraced fields and small Berber villages built of pisé and stone. Day-trippers come for a 2-3h walk to Aroumd village and the Sidi Chamharouch shrine; serious hikers commit 2 days to the Toubkal summit; lighter travelers stay 1 night in a kasbah, drink mint tea on a terrace, and head back.

Yes — by Moroccan law, a licensed mountain guide is required for the Toubkal summit. We arrange them.

Can I do Imlil as a day trip from Marrakech?

Yes — 1h45 each way and a 2-3h hike fit comfortably in a day. Staying overnight is more rewarding.

How fit do I need to be for the Toubkal summit?

Moderate fitness — the trail is non-technical, but altitude (4,167 m) and 1,000 m elevation gain from the refuge make it demanding. Plan one acclimatisation day.
