A wind-blessed peninsula between Atlantic ocean and Sahara dunes, Dakhla is a world-class kitesurf and wing-foil destination — and one of Morocco’s last true frontiers.
A 40-km peninsula 1,500 km south of Casablanca, Dakhla is where the Atlantic meets the Sahara. A 25-km lagoon protected from the open ocean delivers flat water and steady 18-30 knot wind almost year-round — making it one of the top 3 kite/wing destinations in the world. Beyond the lagoon: the White Dune that "moves" with the wind, the Imlili stromatolite pools (living 3.5-billion-year-old micro-organisms), nomad tea houses, oyster farms. Few tourists, raw nature, and one of the best fish/oyster scenes in Morocco.
Things to do in Dakhla
1Take 5+ days of kitesurf or wing-foil lessons on the lagoon — IKO-certified schools at every camp (about €200 / 4h beginner package).
2Cross the lagoon at low tide to the White Dune for sunset — dune slides into the lagoon, classic photo.
3Visit Imlili pools — living stromatolites and the only such site in Morocco (geological pilgrimage).
4Eat at L’Araignée Gourmande or at the port — fresh oysters at €0.50 each, gigantic Atlantic prawn grills.
5Sandboard "the wave dune" at Foum Labouir 1h south.
6Whale & dolphin spotting trips Aug–Oct in the Dakhla Bay.
7Bird-watch at the Khenifiss lagoon (en route to Dakhla) — flamingos, ospreys.
