About Sahara — Merzouga

Erg Chebbi is a 28-km-long, 5-km-wide ridge of orange-red dunes rising up to 150 m above the surrounding hammada. Most travelers reach Merzouga as the climax of a 3-day private tour from Marrakech via Aït Ben Haddou, the Dadès Valley and the Todra Gorges. The classic arc: arrive 4 pm, camel trek 90 minutes into the dunes, sunset on a high crest, Berber dinner and drumming at camp, sunrise camel back, breakfast at the kasbah-hotel, then either return to Marrakech (long) or continue to Fes via Midelt (cooler altitude route).

Things to do in Sahara — Merzouga

  1. Ride camels 60–90 min into the dunes for sunset — wear a turban (cheche), the guide will tie it for you.
  2. Sleep in a luxury Berber tent — modern desert camps have private bathrooms, plush beds, and Wi-Fi.
  3. Climb the tallest dune at 5 am for sunrise — leave camp 30 min before first light, take it slow in soft sand.
  4. Drive a 4x4 to the Algerian border at Erg Znaigui — fewer tourists, often a stop for nomad tea.
  5. Visit a Khamlia village for an evening of Gnawa music — direct descendants of sub-Saharan slave caravans.
  6. Sandboard a dune face — most camps lend boards free of charge.
  7. Spot fennec foxes, desert hares and migratory flamingos at the seasonal Dayet Srji lake (Mar–May).

Local tips for Sahara — Merzouga

  • Book a real desert camp ON the dunes — not a hotel "at the edge". The 90-minute camel ride matters.
  • Pack a fleece + light down jacket — nights drop to 5–10 °C even in summer; winter nights touch zero.
  • Headlamp is essential at camp (most camps run generator off at 11 pm).
  • Avoid the cheap Marrakech "2N/3D" group buses — exhausting, rushed, mediocre camps. Worth paying for a private 4x4 trip.
  • Don’t leave luggage at hotel reception in Merzouga — bring an overnight bag to the camp, leave the rest in your driver’s car.

Sahara — Merzouga — frequently asked questions

How long is the drive from Marrakech to Merzouga?

About 9–10 hours direct. We recommend a 3-day trip stopping at Aït Ben Haddou, the Dadès Valley, and the Todra Gorges along the way.

Is it cold in the Sahara at night?

Yes — desert nights are cold year-round. In winter (Dec–Feb) it can hit 0 °C; even in summer the difference between day (38 °C) and night (15 °C) is dramatic. Bring warm layers.

Can I drive to the desert camp myself?

No — camps are 5–10 km off-road in soft sand, accessible only by 4x4 or camel. Park at the hotel and take their transfer.
