About Marrakech

Founded in 1062 by the Almoravids, Marrakech blends Berber, Andalusian and Saharan influences. Inside the salmon-pink medina walls, narrow derbs hide centuries-old riads, tiled madrasas, spice souks and storyteller squares — while the modern Gueliz and Hivernage districts add rooftop bars, designer boutiques and contemporary art. Three days lets you split your time between the historic medina, a hammam afternoon, a Majorelle garden morning, and a day trip into the High Atlas or to the Agafay desert.

Things to do in Marrakech

  1. Watch the sunset transform Jemaa el-Fnaa into an open-air theatre of musicians, snake charmers and food stalls.
  2. Tour the Bahia Palace, Saadian Tombs and Ben Youssef Madrasa in a single half-day cultural loop.
  3. Get lost on purpose in the souks — start at Souk Semmarine for textiles, then Souk Haddadine for ironwork.
  4. Spend a morning at Jardin Majorelle and the adjacent Yves Saint Laurent Museum, then lunch at nearby Le Studio.
  5. Book a traditional hammam at Les Bains de Marrakech or La Mamounia — black soap, kessa scrub and ghassoul clay.
  6. Drive 1h into the Atlas to the Ourika Valley for waterfalls and a tagine lunch with a Berber family.
  7. Take a hot-air balloon flight over the palm groves at sunrise (€180–€220 per person).
  8. Catch a fantasia or Chez Ali dinner show on the outskirts for an evening of horseback charges and folklore.
  9. Sip mint tea on a rooftop at Café des Épices or Nomad — best views over the medina rooftops.

Local tips for Marrakech

  • Negotiate in souks — start at 30–40% of the asking price and meet in the middle. A smile beats a frown.
  • Stay inside the medina at a riad for the experience, but pick one within 500 m of a medina gate so taxis can drop close.
  • The "free guide" who insists the tannery is closed is steering you to his cousin’s shop — politely refuse.
  • ATM at Bab Doukkala or Place du 16 Novembre dispenses MAD reliably; avoid airport rates.
  • In summer (Jul–Aug) days can hit 42 °C — schedule sightseeing before 11am and after 5pm.
