Best Beaches in Morocco for Swimming: 2026 Local Guide
The best beaches in Morocco for swimming — Atlantic and Mediterranean picks for families, surfers and quiet days, with water temperatures, season tips and how to get there.
By MoroccoForYou Editorial · Published May 18, 2026 · Updated May 29, 2026

The best beaches in Morocco for swimming sit on two very different coastlines: the warm, calm Mediterranean north and the cooler, livelier Atlantic west. If your priority is swimming with kids, Saidia, Al Hoceima, M’Diq and Cabo Negro on the Mediterranean are unbeatable in summer. For year-round beach holidays, Agadir’s long bay and Taghazout’s coves are Morocco’s sunniest beach destinations. Below is a 2026 honest guide — which beaches actually work for swimming (not all do), water temperatures month-by-month, and where families, surfers and quiet-day seekers should each head.
Atlantic or Mediterranean? The honest difference
Morocco’s Atlantic coast is what most travellers picture: wide sandy bays at Agadir, fishing ports at Essaouira, the surf coast at Taghazout. The water is colder than people expect — 17°C in winter, peaking at 22°C in September — and the wind picks up steadily from noon. Stunning, dramatic, but not the warm-bath swimming many family travellers want.
The Mediterranean coast in northern Morocco (from M’Diq to Saidia) is the opposite: shorter coastline, clear turquoise water at 22–27°C in summer, much less wind, beach clubs and family-friendly resorts. This is where Moroccans themselves go on summer holiday.
The 7 best beaches in Morocco for swimming
Ranked for swimming specifically — not surfing, not scenery. The order reflects water clarity, gentleness of waves, safety for kids, and how easy it is to get there.
- 1. Saidia (Mediterranean, near the Algerian border) — 14 km of fine sand, turquoise water, calm waves. Morocco’s longest swimmable beach.
- 2. Cabo Negro / M’Diq (near Tetouan) — Spanish-influenced resort coast, calm, family-friendly, lots of beach clubs.
- 3. Quemado (Al Hoceima) — small bay enclosed by cliffs, very calm, clear water, lifeguarded.
- 4. Agadir Bay — 6 km of supervised sand, full resort facilities, family-friendly Atlantic.
- 5. Plage Achakar (15 km west of [Tangier](/destinations/casablanca/)) — long Atlantic sand, lifeguards in summer, fewer crowds than the city beach.
- 6. Legzira (south Atlantic, near Sidi Ifni) — dramatic red-rock arches, cooler water, photogenic.
- 7. Imsouane Bay (1h north of Agadir) — calm horseshoe bay with the longest right-hand wave in Africa for surfers, but also gentle swim area at the harbour end.
Water temperatures month-by-month
This is the table every family traveller asks for. Numbers are typical surface temperatures, not extremes.
| Month | Atlantic (Agadir) | Mediterranean (Saidia) | Comfort |
|---|---|---|---|
| January | 17 | 15 | Atlantic only with wetsuit |
| April | 18 | 17 | Brief swims only |
| June | 19 | 21 | Mediterranean comfortable |
| July | 20 | 24 | Both warm |
| August | 21 | 26 | Peak — Mediterranean ideal |
| September | 22 | 25 | Best Atlantic, still warm Med |
| October | 21 | 22 | Still good |
| December | 18 | 17 | Atlantic with wetsuit only |
Best beach for families with kids
For families with young kids, Cabo Negro and Saidia win. The water is calm and warm, the sand fine, beach clubs offer loungers and lunch, and the resorts (Iberostar Saidia, Be Live Cabo Negro) include pools, kids clubs and all-inclusive options. Drive time is the main consideration — Saidia is 4 hours from Casablanca; Cabo Negro is 1 hour from Tangier.
For families with older kids who like activity, Agadir Bay is unbeatable: gentle Atlantic surf, camel rides, banana boats, supervised beach, and easy day trips to Paradise Valley and Taghazout.
Best beach for surf and watersports
Taghazout (20 min north of Agadir) and its sister breaks (Anchor Point, Banana Point, Killer Point) are Morocco’s surfing heart. Imsouane has the longest right-hander in Africa. Dakhla (1,500 km south) is the world-class kitesurf and wing-foil destination, with a 25 km lagoon of flat water and 18–30 knot wind year-round. For windsurfing without the journey, Essaouira’s "alizé" makes it the easy choice from Marrakech.
Best beach for a quiet day
Skip Casablanca’s city beach (busy, average) and head 30 km south to Plage de Dar Bouazza or Plage de Tamaris. From [Essaouira](/destinations/casablanca/), drive 25 km south to Sidi Kaouki for a long, almost-empty Atlantic stretch with horses and camels. From Tangier, Plage Achakar is cleaner and calmer than the city beach.
Beach etiquette and what to wear
On resort beaches, beach clubs and hotel beachfronts, bikinis and swimming costumes are standard. On public city beaches and rural beaches frequented by Moroccan families, a one-piece swimsuit attracts less attention and is more respectful. Topless is illegal everywhere.
Friday afternoons are family time on every Moroccan beach — busier but also when the food carts (grilled fish, fresh juice, donuts) come out in force.
Getting to Morocco’s beaches
Agadir has its own airport (AGA), with direct flights from London, Paris, Madrid and most European hubs. Saidia and the Mediterranean coast are best reached by flying into Oujda (OUD) or driving from Casablanca (4 hours). For Essaouira and Taghazout, fly into Marrakech (RAK) or rent a car — see our [Casablanca Airport rental guide](/rent-a-car/casablanca-airport/) if you want maximum flexibility.
