Is Ouarzazate Worth Visiting? The Honest Answer

Ouarzazate is the base, not the destination. Treat it as one and you will be disappointed — the city itself is functional and unglamorous, built partly on the site of a former French Foreign Legion outpost. Treat it as the gateway it actually is, and it delivers some of the best value in Morocco: the UNESCO-listed Ait Benhaddou kasbah 30km away, Africa's largest film studios, and the launch point for the Draa Valley and the road to the Sahara.

Most travelers see Ouarzazate as a single long day trip from Marrakech, and the drive itself — crossing the Tizi n'Tichka pass at 2,260m, Morocco's highest paved road pass — is genuinely part of the experience: switchbacks, Berber villages clinging to mountainsides, and sweeping High Atlas views. But a day trip means roughly 8 hours of the day spent in the car (4 hours each way), leaving limited time on the ground. Staying one night changes the experience entirely — morning light on Ait Benhaddou is one of the best photographs Morocco offers, and by 9am the tour buses have already arrived.

Atlas Studios — Touring Africa's Largest Film Complex

Atlas Studios, roughly 4km west of central Ouarzazate on the road toward Marrakech, is the largest outdoor film studio in the world by land area — approximately 30,000 square meters of permanent standing sets, including intact Egyptian temple facades, Roman forums, and medieval village streets built for productions and left standing for the next one. Alongside neighbouring CLA Studios, the complex has hosted over 50 major international productions: Lawrence of Arabia, Gladiator, The Mummy, Kingdom of Heaven, Babel, Alexander, Sahara, and multiple seasons of Game of Thrones.

The self-guided or guided walk-through takes you past standing sets you will likely recognize even without knowing the film titles — the scale of the Egyptian and Roman constructions is the main draw, alongside a small on-site Cinema Museum displaying props, costumes and equipment from actual productions.

Ait Benhaddou — The UNESCO Kasbah 30 Minutes Away

Ait Benhaddou is Ouarzazate's headline attraction and, for many travelers, the single most photographed site of their entire Morocco trip. A UNESCO World Heritage-listed ksar (fortified earthen village) of terracotta towers rising from a river valley, it has appeared on screen in Lawrence of Arabia, Gladiator, The Last Temptation of Christ, four episodes of Game of Thrones, and — most recently — as the burning city of Troy in Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey (2026).

The ksar is still partially inhabited, and walking through it means climbing narrow earthen alleyways to a hilltop granary with panoramic Draa Valley views. Cross the river via the footbridge (or, in high water, a small paid ferry) from the modern village opposite.

Taourirt Kasbah — Ouarzazate's Own Historic Monument

Often overshadowed by the day-trip rush to Ait Benhaddou, Taourirt Kasbah sits right in Ouarzazate itself — a genuine former residence of the powerful Glaoui family, who controlled much of southern Morocco through the early 20th century. It is a maze of decorated rooms, courtyards, and earthen towers, one of the finest kasbahs in southern Morocco, and requires none of the day-trip logistics Ait Benhaddou does.

Beyond the Kasbahs — Draa Valley, Skoura Oasis and the Road South

Ouarzazate is the launch point for the "Road of a Thousand Kasbahs" — the Draa Valley route running southeast toward Zagora and the Erg Chigaga dunes, and the alternative Dades/Todra route east toward Merzouga and Erg Chebbi. Both are lined with fortified villages, palm oases, and rose-growing valleys that most standard Marrakech-only itineraries never see.

The Noor Ouarzazate Solar Complex

Just outside the city sits one of the largest concentrated solar power plants on earth — the Noor Ouarzazate complex, part of Morocco's push toward renewable energy leadership in North Africa. It is visible from the main highway approaching from Marrakech and represents a genuinely different side of Ouarzazate's "gateway" role: not just a gateway to the Sahara for travelers, but a literal gateway for Morocco's solar energy ambitions, harnessing the same relentless desert sun that has drawn film crews here for over 60 years.
